Watering Guidelines for Annuals, Perennials, Trees and Shrubs

As the weather gets hotter it’s important to be mindful of each of your plants specific watering needs. Here are some tips provided by green experts David Jones and Sharon Kaszan that will ensure the longevity and health of your garden!

Annuals

Annuals planted in the ground may need water every other day until established – dependent on soil conditions and temperature.

  • Water annuals with a watering can or garden hose with a watering wand attachment.

  • Annuals in containers and hanging baskets should be checked daily – water when dry.

  • During periods of extreme heat and active growth watering may be required more frequently.

Perennials

Most perennials require an equal amount of water to the size of their container.

  • For example: A 1 gallon container perennial needs 1 gallon of water. 2 gallon container perennial needs 2 gallons of water, and so on.

  • Water once or twice a week, depending on soil condition and temperatures.

  • Much like annuals, water perennials with a watering can or a garden hose with watering want attachment.

Trees and Shrubs

Typically, trees require 5 gallons of water per inch of tree caliper (diameter)

  • Trees should be watered once a week – unless 1″ or more of rain occurs.

  • It’s important to use a rain gauge to measure rainfall in your area – place one in an open location in your yard.

  • Treegator Water Bags and Donuts can also be used to provide slow-release watering for trees. Be sure to remove the bag when empty.

  • To be sure you’re watering enough, time how long it takes to fill a 1 gallon container with water.

    • At BCG, it took us 18 seconds to fill a 1 gallon container with a garden hose and watering wand on the shower setting at full pressure. Be mindful of that time so you don’t overwater your trees.

In most cases, shrubs require an equal amount of water to the size of their container.

  • For example: A 3 gallon container shrub needs 3 gallons of water. 5 gallons needs 5 gallons of water. etc.

  • Shrubs should be watered once or twice a week – depending on your soil condition and temperatures.

  • When watering with a watering can or garden hose with a watering wand attachment, concentrate on the base of the shrub.
